Grafting of soft tissue and dental bone
With bone grafting, you can strengthen your jaw so that an implant is possible
You need a sufficient amount of healthy bone in your jaw in order for your dental implant to be stable. It is possible that your jaw bone has already deteriorated if you lost a tooth some time ago. The same goes for those with an injury, tumor, or bone defect. If you have any of these conditions, you may not have enough bone for the implant to hold.
A bone graft may be recommended in this situation by Dr. John Doe to increase the amount of healthy bone in the area.
In order to augment the implant area, bone can be harvested from an adjacent part of the jaw or from the hip bone. Bone grafts made of synthetic material or from animals may also be used.
Bone grafting can be done in two ways
Placing implants and grafting bone at the same time: Implant placement and bone grafting can be performed simultaneously in moderate bone loss cases
Staged bone grafting: An implant can be placed after several months of healing if a severe bone loss occurs first.
The grafting of soft tissue corrects receding gums
A soft tissue graft may be necessary before implant surgery if your gums are receding. It would otherwise expose a portion of the implant post (abutment). A healthy area of your gum is grafted to enhance your gum line. Your dental implant can be placed after this has healed – usually in a few months.
