EXTENSIVE DEEP DENTAL CLEANING

A thorough cleaning, which may involve scaling or root planing, is usually the first step in treating periodontal disease. These non-surgical techniques aim to remove etiologic agents that promote gingival inflammation and infection, such as tooth plaque and tartar or calculus. Scaling and root planing can be used as a treatment or as a prophylactic strategy. They’re frequently used to treat gingivitis and moderate-to-severe periodontitis.

What Happens During the Procedures?

Registered dental hygienists will only perform scaling and root planing at Comfort Dental Clinic after a complete inspection of the mouth, including obtaining x-rays and physically inspecting the mouth. Dr. XYZ may propose scaling and root planing depending on the state of the gums, the quantity of tartar present, the depth of the pockets, and the advancement of periodontitis. During the procedure, a local anesthetic may be utilized in some circumstances.

Scaling:

Scaling is a procedure that removes calculus and plaque from tooth surfaces. The procedure focuses on the area beneath the gum line and along the root. Scaling is done with an ultrasonic scaling tool, which is a type of dental tool. The scaling device usually comes with an irrigation system that can inject an antibacterial substance below the gum line to help reduce oral bacteria.

Root Planing:

Cementum and surface dentin encrusted with undesirable germs, poisons, and tartar are removed during root planing. The tooth’s root is smoothed, promoting healing and preventing bacteria from invading the tooth in the future.

Antibiotics or antimicrobial irrigation (chemical agents or mouth rinses) may be advised to reduce the growth of bacteria that cause periodontitis by producing toxins. After scaling and planing, Dr. XYZ may put antibiotic fibers in the periodontal pockets in rare situations. This can be done to keep an infection at bay and promote steady recovery.

It is difficult for Dr. XYZ to thoroughly remove plaque and tartar when large pockets between teeth and gums exist. Patients are rarely, if ever, able to keep these pockets clean and plaque-free. As a result, periodontal surgery may be required to restore periodontal health.

Benefits of Treatment

Scaling and planing may offer numerous periodontal benefits if treatment is successful. One benefit is that it can aid in illness prevention. Bacteria from periodontal infections have been shown in studies to move into the bloodstream and impact other parts of the body, including heart and respiratory illnesses. Scaling and root planing are used to get rid of the microorganisms that cause these problems.

Another advantage of the therapy is that it protects teeth against tooth loss. Periodontal disease is more likely when gum pockets are deeper than 3mm. More bacteria can colonize as pockets deepen, eventually triggering a chronic inflammatory response in the body that destroys gingival and bone tissue. This results to losing teeth.

Finally, scaling and root planing can improve the appearance of the mouth while also reducing foul breath produced by food particles and bacteria in the mouth. Scaling and planing will remove surface stains on the teeth, which will benefit the process.
